Revision of the Nice Classification: caution when renewing a trademark

20.03.2024

When a French trademark is renewed, the French trademark office (INPI) carries out a check of the classification of the goods and services and reclassifies them so that the goods and services designated by this trademark are classified according to the latest revision of the Nice classification in the French trademark register as from the trademark renewal.

If a good or service changes class upon renewal pursuant to INPI’s check  and a new good or service class, not initially designated by the trademark, has to be designated to cover all goods and services initially designated, the INPI will ask payment of an additional class fee for each new good or service class designated.
